AUTOMATED CONTROL SYSTEMSSHLEM AUTOMATED FIRE CONTROL SYSTEM OF IGLA MANPADS
The Shlem system comprises: - a commander’s workstation incorporating a special computer, a GPS receiver, a USW radio set and a radio modem accommodated in a portable case transformable into the workstation platform; - one to nine launch stations, including a twin-round launcher for Igla or Igla-1 missiles, an optronic sight, an information processing unit and a radio modem. The Shlem system provides for topographic control, reception of data from the target acquisition radar or battery command post, display of air situation on the monitor of the commander’s workstation, target selection, distribution and designation, data recording, and drills. Information on a spatial position of the assigned target, its range and an estimated time of approach in the digital form, as well as control commands are fed to the optronic sight mounted on the launcher. The Shlem system enables the gunner to lay the launcher in the direction of a target and prepare for launch before the target appears in his field of vision. The missile can also be launched following the warhead lockon signal without gunner’s visual contact with the target. The above capabilities significantly improve the combat effectiveness of the MANPADS, specifically against low-flying targets and in the conditions of poor visibility.
